Responsibilities And Duties

  • Guard prisoners/inm ates assuming responsibility for all needs o f
  • prisoners/inmates during detention or transportation.
  • Function as a patrol deputy interfacing
  • directly with the public on moving violations, domestic issues, crimes committed, and various
  • other citizen concerns. M ay investigate crimes, interface with victims, severe legal documents,
  • participate in court hearing providing security measures or oral testimony.
  • Prepare reports, issue memos, and write correspondence which are both intra and
  • interdepartmental in nature; refer individuals to the proper agencies and provides other types o f
  • guidance, etc.
  • Initiate inquires concerning possible law violations o f adults or juveniles; obtains, presents,
  • verifies, and analyzes factual information and other evidence. Make arrests by determining if
  • there is probable cause. Identifies the suspect; takes suspect into custody and informs suspect o f
  • his civil rights. Seizes and/or prepares property for safekeeping.
  • Operate a m otor vehicle in a safe m anner and in compliance with all Missouri laws and
  • regulations.
  • Perform traffic enforcem ent and assist with m otor vehicle accidents and other
  • medical em ergencies as necessary. Required to maintain Missouri P.O.S.T Police officer
  • certification and adhere to P.O.S.T training requirements.

Qualifications And Skills

  • High School Diplom a or GED required. Seven Hundred (700) hr. basic
  • certification plus forty-eight (48) hours continuing training. M ust be Power Phone Certified and
  • Dual State Certified. M ust be twenty-one (21) years o f age to be a Deputy.

Participation

Employee Contributions

  • LAGERS participants hired on or after February 25, 2002 contribute 4% of gross salary.

Vesting And Retirement

  • Members become vested after eight years of continuous creditable service during which they receive pay for at least 1,000 hours in each year.
  • A vested member is eligible for a full benefit at age 62 or an actuarially reduced benefit as early as age 55.
  • If an employee leaves county service before vesting, employee contributions are refunded or may be rolled over to another eligible retirement plan.
