PRESS RELEASE
Taney County Law Enforcement Tax

What's on the April Ballot?
Replaces existing 1/8 of 1% Sales Tax.

Puts in place a 3/8 of 1% sales tax, which is an increase of $0.01 for every $4.00 spent on
taxable goods within Taney County.

Adds the ability to use the funds for other Taney County Law enforcement, specifically
Prosecution and Juvenile services.

What will the funds be used for and why do we need this tax?
Law Enforcement, Jail and Jail Operations, Prosecution, and the Juvenile Department.

Taney County Jail has the ability to hold roughly 268 inmates and is often times at or beyond
capacity.

Currently we have only 3 to 4 road deputies on at any given time to take care of over 650 square
miles. These funds will be utilized to attract more deputies and allow us to be competitive with
surrounding law enforcement entities.

There are multiple, and recent unfunded mandates from the state putting requirements on the
County without giving the extra resources needed to perform these tasks. Examples of these
are to hire an attorney on staff for the sole purpose of the Juvenile Office, and that all 17 year
olds will now be considered juveniles and no longer adults for the purpose of prosecution.

At last report, the State of Missouri owes Taney County over $1.3 million in prisoner per diem
reimbursements and is currently between $25 and $30 million in arrears statewide.
